Class of 1962 Scholarship Project and Updates
Scroll to the End to See List of "Our Scholarship Children"
Scholarship Process:
Our Class of 1962 made the decision, after our successful 40th class reunion in 2002, to present a scholarship to a
deserving Grundy
High School Senior. We had accumulated some money from sales of personalized
CDs and from personal donations and memorials. Classmates worked together to set up the Rules and Guidelines.
In 2003 three students submitted
an essay on "Perceived Differences in a Graduating Student from 1962 and One in 2003". The Scholarship Committee
selected a committee of judges from three different states. From the process, the winner was chosen. Essay, class participation
and transcript played a role in choosing a winner.
At Grundy
High School Graduation on June 12, 2003,
Buddy Reedy, '62 Beta Club President, on behalf of the 1962 Class presented a $500 check (made payable also to college of
choice) to Kelly Renee Childress. The selection was not revealed till presented.
Class of 1962
continued to accumulate money from special projects of Class Cookbook and Friendship Quilt Raffle plus memorial and memory
donations. A $500 scholarship was presented for the next three years to a Grundy
High School Senior. Classmate Banna Lou Bailey Bevins was the GHS Guidance
Counselor and worked with the GHS Scholarship Committee to make the judgment as to a deserving GHS college bound senior.
Class of 1962
has FOUR SCHOLARSHIP CHILDREN to be proud of. Our first, Kelly, graduated from
Radford University in May 2007 and she
will testify that our encouragement played a role in some of the tough decisions she had to make regarding her education.
Classmate Banna
Bailey Bevins has retired and our contact is not at Grundy High School.
The Scholarship
Committee made the decision to be proud of what we have done and to continue to encourage our “children” and to
discontinue the annual presentation. The students have attended our annual picnics
and we have been able to present them with an annual gas card with monies from our Class Funds. How happy we should be as a class to have participated in this project.
Some of the other classes have admired our efforts and maybe GHS Alumni will continue with something similar.

Kasey graduated GHS 2006. Kasey is a resident
student at UVA-Wise. Kasey was Senator for the Student Government Association
for her Freshman and Sophomore years. She made the Dean’s List for her
first semester of college. She worked for a professor her 1st year. She helped cook dinner at the Baptist Collegiate Ministries Meetings. She was commencement usher for the graduating class of 2007
REPORT FROM KASEY JULY 2008 My 2007/2008 year at UVA-Wise went well. I'm glad to have one more over. This upcoming semester in the Fall,
I will be a Resident Advisor over a building. I am pretty excited! This Summer I have a job working as a secretary at the
Honda Shop in Grundy. I've been fortunate enough to work there for the past 2 Summers and again this year. It is going good
as well. I can't complain. I will head back to school on August 7th. I hope all is well with you and all the classmates.
